Make a lot of noise when shredding.

I was a little concerned when I received and unpacked this machine. There was a strange noise, like tumbling broken glass, whenever I moved it. I didn't see anything broken, so continued to set it up and put it to use. The machine is very quiet in operation. I haven't tried it with 16 sheets, and it does run paper through more slowly than our last machine. The "Bin full' warning is a nice feature. The machine stops, "bin full" signal flashes, it beeps, and then spits back out the paper it was working on. Time to pull out the bin, empty it, and then continue shredding. I put it through quite a test, getting rid of a box of papers I had set aside to shred, and never had a problem with it overheating or getting jammed.

I have used some of the cheaper Fellowes shredders in the past, and have been happy with them. I needed to scale up my shredding activities, and after reading the reviews on this Royal 160MX, I figured it would be worth trying out. Now, in theory it looks like a great buy; it has a large paper tray, can shred up to 16 sheets in a go, as well as CD's/DVD's.
After two days of LIGHT shredding, I started to hear groaning noises coming from the shredder. I figured it might have been a paper jam, so I tried reversing the blades. That didn't fix anything, so I opened it up and had a look inside. It turned out that some of the blades had actually deformed, and paper had started to form in between the rollers, squishing some of the blades together. I tried scraping some of the paper out, but with all those layers, it just wasn't possible to clear them off the rollers. The damage had already been done, and one of the plastic rollers had started to crack. I am waiting to see if the store I bought it from will give me a refund, or at the very least an exchange.
Now, if the other reviewers find that this shredder works fine for them, that's great. Unfortunately, that was not the case with mine. That said, whether or not my product was defective, the design of the shredding rollers is definitely inferior to that of even the cheapest Fellowes ones. I would tell people who have moderate to heavy shredding needs to avoid this shredder at all costs, but I suppose even those with light shredding may want to try a cheaper, Fellowes model.
I gave this Royal shredder 1 star because it failed to do what it claims to. I would understand if 16 pages at a time might be a bit much, but I never shred more than 8 in a go.

The reason I said so far so good is because a shredder is quite unpredictable. Based on my experience, a shredder can die any time. With that said, this shredder has been working quite well for the 2 months since I started using it. The basket is big enough although one will need to take the basket out a bit and shake it from time to time, otherwise the built-in sensor will stop the shredding due to a perceived full basket while it is actually only half full. My typical shredding job can be categorized as heavy duty. A 30 gallons bagful of confetti is the norm and some time more. Had shredded credit cards, CDs, staples, light cardboard with no issue. Continous shredding( for approxiately 30 minutes ) had resulted in shredder overheat but resumed operation after it cooled down. My complaints are: (1) the feed slot design makes feeding not easy at time; (2) there is a pause between shreds if the feeding is not continous; (3) there is also a pasue between rewind and forward, presumably to avoid overheating of the motor. Overall, I am happy with this shredder and would recommend to others who are looking for a heavy duty shredding machine.

Yes this machine shreds, and cross cuts too, at the same time, BUT ----- the feeder is awkward so that you will find yourself re-feeding the same stack of sheets several times. I imagine the problem is with a safety feature that prevents you from accidentally feeding your fingers into the blades, but the result of this feature is that the papers need to be fed at a very particular angle and they easily get jammed against the back of the machine rather than going into the jaws of death.
